The reason people say that time slips away like sand is not because that, somewhere in their minds, they are thinking of hour glasses. It is because, in searching for an analogy, they look first upwards and then down. Failing anything profound, they have either a choice between dirt or their shoes. Time jumbles like a pair of unruly shoelaces.

I am trying to stay awake, but do not know why. I think I believe that consciousness is only worthy in one solid stream, not broken apart into clumps by sleep. If I live until I am eighty, I will have slept approximately 26.667 years, based on a statistic I heard. And time slips away like a trackless rubber boot in inclement weather.
